Hi Zombie horde!

Less than a month to go till the glorious goriness that is World Zombie Day: London! Are you excited? Here at WZD HQ we can BARELY WAIT – here’s a sneaky peek why!

– 2012 will see a dramatically different route from previous years, taking in some of London’s most loved landmarks – there will be some fantastic group photo opportunities! Meeting time is still 13:00 – nearest tube stops Southwark/Blackfriars… details to be released soon.

– We have tried to source stops where there is a choice of pubs, resulting in less time waiting at the bar (we hope)!

– The final pub , the Intrepid Fox, will be our WZD party venue! For a donation on the door of £2 there will be bands, including the fantastic steampunk legends The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing, and some scarily sexy zombie burlesque. Prizes will be handed out for our top fundraisers too! We already have some STIFF competition  – start your own page and ask your friends to sponsor you, or simply donate what you can spare at Team Zombie Just Giving page

– In conjunction with the Facebook friends at ‘Going to the Winchester, having a pint and waiting for this all to blow over’ there will be a midnight screening of the much-loved ZomRomCom  ‘Sean of the Dead’ at the Leicester Square Theatre. Pints and Cornettos will be on sale! Tickets available soon…

Make sure you’re checking our facebook page for updates.

Hope this gets the zombie juices flowing! SEE YOU THERE!

WZD Illustrated Map

This year, our route map has been illustrated by Badaude – London artist and fashion blogger extraordinaire! Badaude is a regular contributor to The Idler and writes and illustrates a weekly column in the Times. Her illustrations have appeared in the Guardian, the Independent, New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

The route is still top secret so you’ll have to wait till the week before the event to see it, but check out her brilliant book ‘London Walks‘ to get an idea of what to expect…

The map will be available for you to download and print before the day, and if you love it  (I know you will!) you may be interested to know that we’ll be auctioning off the original map artwork, along with a copy of the book in aid of St.Mungo’s. A bidding war has already started amongst  team WZD! You can place a bid before the event by emailing becca@worldzombieday.co.uk

Not long to go now folks!

“THE DEAD” Fancy Dress Competition

The Dead DVD 3D
Do you suffer from post-WZD blues? We have the answer – the brilliant zombie flick The Dead will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on 10th October – so you still have something to look forward to when all the groaning
/shuffling (and drinking) is over and the fake blood stains begin to fade.

The Dead, a zombie road movie with a spiritual centre — that director Ford calls The English Patient meets Dawn of the Dead — is set in the very near future where most of the world has succumbed to the virus of the living dead. After crashing off the coast of Africa, Lt. Brian Murphy battles for survival across the continent in search of a way to get back to his family in the US. Saved by local military man Daniel Dembele, who is also searching for his son, the two join up, all the while battling against the ever-present zombie threat.

In association with Anchor Bay, we will be having a competition during World Zombie Day to find the best The Dead themed zombie costume on the march, with exclusive shiny prizes for the winner. This winner will receive a copy of The Dead on DVD and Blu-ray, a t-shirt and signed poster.

Check out the trailers on YouTube for inspiration! The film features old-school, slow-moving zombies, simply and effectively portrayed as dead-eyed, pallid and dirty. Any classic zombies, whether sporting blank-eyed contacts, blood-spattered or dribbling brains, will be deemed eligible to enter the competition, while a military theme would be particularly relevant. Feel free to try and emulate the special effects if you’ve seen the film!

What’s the charity? How can I help?

Greetings Zombies!

Welcome to any of you newly crawled from the grave, and welcome back to long time shufflers who have experienced the groaning, moaning, blood splattered day of pleasure that is WZD London before!

This year the zombie horde will be marching in support of St.Mungo’s, an organisation that does amazing work helping London’s homeless people. You can find more information on the work they do here – http://www.mungos.org/

So, what can you do to help? There are a number of ways:

  • Simply donate to the group’s JustGiving pages here: http://www.justgiving.com/WZDlondon
  • Sponsor our mascot ‘Wozzy’ by texting AQOK92 £AMOUNT to 70070. Share this Instructional Handout with friends or strangers.
  • Set up a JustGiving page yourself and ask your friends, family and colleagues to sponsor you. THERE WILL BE PRIZES FOR THE TOP FUNDRAISERS! See the JustGiving website for details of how to set up your own page here: http://www.justgiving.com/
  • You can use a good, old-fashioned paper sponsorship form instead if you prefer. We have one from St.Mungo’s that has a gift aid option. Download the  Sponsorship Form or email becca@worldzombieday.co.uk and I can send you a printable PDF version.
  • Chuck some change in the collection buckets that will be at a few of the venues along the way!
  • Keep checking this blog at The Zombie Digest for more fund-raising ideas or subscribe by email
  • Buy a WZD London T-shirt

Those of you who have come along before will know how many people stop and ask for photos, ask what we’re doing or even get involved and a zombie make-over from helpful members of the horde! This year we will have flyers with the JustGive text number for WZD on them, we  would love you to hand these out and (gently) encourage these people to donate to our cause 🙂

Zombie Laundry

Zombies – Are you tired of stubborn, hard to shift blood stains on your clothes? Ground-in dirt making your after-life miserable? Is your restless shuffling attire looking a little worse for wear? Musician/film director/screen writer and all-round legend Rob Zombie has the answer….

My Cat is a Zombie

There are a multitude of surprises for the unprepared Zombie: fake blood that stains everything (including your skin), internet “skin” recipes that don’t quite work – and a sudden realisation that inviting everyone else round to get liquid latex all over your living room carpet is not exactly landlord-friendly. But nothing can be more unexpected than discovering that, entirely without you ever having realised, your beloved cat is actually one of the flesh-guzzling undead!

But that’s exactly what happened to me in October 2010. I’d done my homework in advance, of course, and found some fairly simple online recipes for fake blood (in addition to the gorgeous, but expensive, stuff from theatreland’s Charles Fox). Daisy was her usual curious self during the preparation, watching as I splashed a mixture of flour, glucose syrup and food colouring across a torn corset. As I stepped back to leave it to dry, and she rushed forward, I thought it was simple interest in the new addition to the flat. And then she started munching away.

Of course, that was when I realised my eventual fate. I suppose it became inevitable when I first moved into my one bed flat, with only Daisy for company. All this dressing up – well, it’s just a rehearsal for the big event – maybe years from now, maybe tomorrow! When the neighbours notice the smell, and the police break down the door of my flat, only to discover this:

World Zombie Day: cat preparation

rehearsal for the inevitable

This year, just to be on the safe side, I might shut Daisy in the garden while I get ready…
